Honda CVT Gearbox Problems: 2 Recurring Issues You Shouldn't Ignore

Honda CVT Gearbox Problems: 2 Recurring Issues You Shouldn't Ignore. In this video I will talk about Honda CVT gearbox problems.

Here’s a detailed breakdown:
Transmission Failure
The Honda CVT could experience total transmission failure. Certain Honda CVTs, particularly older models from 1998 – 2004, have faced reliability concerns, including transmission errors and potential failure. However, the problem is also common in some modern models. For instance, Honda recalled more than 143,000 2014-2015 Civic and 2015 Fit models for faulty CVT transmission control software. The faulty transmission control software could result in the vehicle stopping suddenly, increasing the risk of an accident at high speeds. While Honda fixed the issue and has consistently improved the CVT transmission system, some drivers still complain.
CVT repairs are very minimal. The only solution for a transmission failure may be a transmission replacement. However, you can prevent possible failure by changing the CVT fluid frequently. Honda typically recommends changing the CVT fluid between 25,000 and 40,000 miles, depending on the driving conditions and model. Honda also recommends using a special CVT oil for improved lubrication.

Overheating
This is a common issue in the older models of the Honda CVT gearbox from 1998 – 2004. Common symptoms of transmission overheating include;
• A burning smell.
• Slipping gears.
• Unusual noises.
• Warning light coming on.
• High transmission temperature gauge.
Overheating may be caused by leaking transmission fluid, radiator and cooling system issues, or excessive towing.
Overheating is the primary cause of transmission failure and should be fixed immediately. Honda has not issued any fixes for overheating. However, if your transmission is overheating, check the fluid levels and look out for any leaks. In some cases, overheating may be fixed by a transmission fluid change. If this does not work, take your vehicle to a dealer or professional mechanic to inspect, repair, or replace any damaged or malfunctioning components. Use the special Honda CVT transmission oil and have the transmission regularly serviced to avoid overheating. Avoiding heavy towing if you don’t have a heavy-duty truck can also help prevent overheating.
