While exploring Istanbul’s secret spots, I got to eat some Turkish cuisine. I had Kuzu at Dürümzade, which was visited by Anthony Bourdain. I also ran into a lollipop maker in Üsküdar, who sold me a Osmanlı Macunu.
I hope this Türkiye vlog helped you learn about some of Istanbul’s secret treasures. If you plan to take a future trip, you can use this information to explore Istanbul like a local.
About the history of Istanbul:
Istanbul, a city steeped in history, straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its rich past dates back to around 660 BCE when it was founded as Byzantium. In 330 CE, Emperor Constantine the Great made it the capital of the Roman Empire, renaming it Constantinople. This ushered in a period of great wealth and influence, making it a pivotal center of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years. The city's significance continued in the Middle Ages as it became a focal point of the Crusades.
However, its most transformative moment came in 1453, when the Ottoman Turks, led by Sultan Mehmed II, conquered Constantinople, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire. Renamed Istanbul, it became the capital of the Ottoman Empire, a status it held until 1923. This era endowed the city with a rich architectural and cultural legacy, blending Eastern and Western influences, visible in landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Today, Istanbul is a vibrant metropolis, echoing centuries of diverse cultural and historical influences.
About Istanbul tourism:
Istanbul, a mesmerizing blend of history and culture, is a top destination for travelers worldwide. Straddling Europe and Asia, it offers a unique experience where East meets West. Tourists are captivated by its historical sites, including the majestic Hagia Sophia, the splendid Blue Mosque, and the bustling Grand Bazaar. The Bosphorus Strait, offering scenic cruises, divides the city's European and Asian sides. Istanbul's rich culinary scene, ranging from street food to upscale restaurants, is a delight for food enthusiasts. The city's vibrant nightlife, diverse shopping options, and warm hospitality further enhance its appeal, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a rich, cultural experience.
