Can I Fix My Own Washer? The Do It Yourself Virgin

Our washer wouldn't fill with water after five nights of sub-freezing temperatures. The laundry is located in the shed in our backyard so we feared the worst - that an exposed pipe in the unfinished shed had frozen and burst (there are inaccessible areas of the shed that would make it difficult to see flooding immediately.)

A complete novice when it comes to troubleshooting major appliances, I was not looking forward to tackling this issue, but it had to be done - we needed clean clothes.

The fix (a temporary one) was easier than expected and the washer is back up and running. Now for the rest of the shed: the water heater has been ruined by a leaky roof that was damaged in Katrina. The temporary fix on the roof is failing so between the water heater, the roof, the exposed electrical and the shifting cinder-block supporting walls, the shed alone would keep me busy for months... but there's the rest of the house, too!

The Do It Yourself Virgin is a video blog documenting the way real people approach real DIY issues... by doing their homework, asking lots of questions, then bravely forging ahead - and when it doesn't work as planned, quickly reassessing and shifting gears.
