Cast Iron Exhaust Manifold Crack/Hole Brazed with Muggy Weld SSF-6 56% Silver Solder Rods and Torch
SSF-6 high strength silver solder brazing rod is utilized to repair a cast iron 1963 Cadillac Deville exhaust manifold. This cast iron exhaust manifold originally started with a crack and quickly became a hole while preparing the parent metal for brazing. While many welders will not attempt to repair cast iron due to the lack of suitable products on the market, we used less than1/2 silver solder rod to make this fill both the crack and the hole in the cast iron.
A Bernzomatic gas/oxygen torch/brazing kit is used for this repair. When purchasing this cast iron repair kit, it's a good idea to buy an extra tank or two of oxygen as they tend to empty much faster than MAPP gas. In this video, we didn't have a backup tank after running out of oxygen, so we switched to a standard oxyacetylene torch to finish the repair.
We advise customers to always preheat the surrounding area before the crack or hole is heated and brazed, to ensure proper flow of the solder and flux.
Note: SSF-6 silver solder also works well on Inconel 718.
This cast iron exhaust manifold was presented to us by a local classic car auto body shop in Olympia, WA (Resurrection Autobody and Paint).
