1958 MGA Restoration 13q Left Rear Fender Dog Leg Repair
Left rear dog leg repair is done. I took my time and welded slowly, bit by bit, and only had one place where I blew through. Welds are ground down, and the resultant seam is filled with Tiger Hair. In all, a time consuming task, but an easy and rather enjoyable one. I'm looking forward to the right side one as well. I'm heartened by how thick the fender metal is, and thus, how easy it is to weld with.
The patch piece didn't fit. I'm beginning to see this is a general trend with MGA patch panels. I measured, I fit, I refit, I remeasured, and when I mated the two pieces together, they were slightly off, as seen in the pictures. The angle where the curved bit and the flat bit meet was also off, so I had to flatten it out a bit. I think I took an hour to do that, bit by bit by bit.
Once done, I filled a small section with Tiger Hair (pics to come later) and sanded it down smooth. In all, not too difficult.
In the near future, I'll be filling a previous repair's seam (it;s straight and consistently deep, so I'm guessing it's a previous repair) and getting the fender in good enough shape to prime, and soon thereafter, paint.
