If you enjoy the video, please like, comment and subscribe, I appreciate it, thank you

Hey folks, driving in Cairo is interesting to watch. It is never boring on the streets of Cairo. For more information subtitles in different languages are available. If you have suggestions or feedback just leave a comment, thank you.

Welcome to my new video. Today I present to you the old Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel that runs under the Suez Canal. The tunnel connects the Sinai Peninsula in Asia to mainland Egypt in Africa. It has two lanes of traffic, one in each direction. The 1.64km (1.02mi) long tunnel was traveled at just 30km/h. A drive through took more than 5 minutes.
The new tunnel, also named after Ahmed Hamdy, is located north of the old tunnel, has 2 tunnels, each with 2 lanes in each direction and can also be driven through faster at 60 km/h.
As far as I know, the old tunnel is used exclusively by the military.

I also permanently displayed the permitted maximum speed. I've heard a lot of complaints about Speeding Tickets. In this way I hope to protect you from possible Speeding tickets. In future videos I will continue this on main roads.

You have to watch out for walking people, taxis, toktok's and especially for (white) microbuses. Their behavior is unpredictable and it can lead to a disaster. Otherwise is driving in Cairo, Egypt a funny and enjoyable thing. Always wear your seat belt and keep to the speed limit.

The old Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel
The Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel (نفق احمد حمدى) connects the Sinai Peninsula in Asia to mainland Egypt in Africa.
It has two lanes of traffic, one in each direction.
The tunnel has been built in November 1981 and reopened 1992.
It was originally constructed as a shield tunnel by Tarmac Construction in November 1981.
In 1992, the Japanese government granted aid to a project aimed at rehabilitating the tunnel which had developed leaks.
The 1.64km (1.02mi) long tunnel was traveled at just 30 km/h. A drive through took more than 5 minutes.
The capacity is designed for 20,000 cars per day.
This tunnel has an outside diameter of 11.6 meters.
The tunnel reaches a max depth of 51 meters (167 feet).
Named after the martyr General Major Ahmed Hamdy.
Ahmed Hamdy was a General in the Third Army during the October 1973 War.
He was born on May 20th, 1929 in Mansoura, Egypt and died at the front 44 years later on 14th October, 1973 during the war.
Hamdi was also known as an international sport shooter for Egypt.
He competed in three events at the 1952 Summer Olympics and won two gold medals at the 1951 Mediterranean Games.

Suez Canal
The Suez Canal (قناة السويس) is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez and dividing Africa and Asia.
The Suez Canal was built from 25th September 1859 to 17th November 1859.
The result is a 193.3 km (120.1 mi) long canal that runs from Suez to Port Said.
The Suez Canal was not the first canal to connect the Red Sea Bay to the Mediterranean Sea.
James Henry Breasted attributes the earliest known attempt to construct a canal up through the first cataract to the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt.
But its completion to Senusret III of the Twelfth dynasty of Egypt.
The legendary Sesostris (likely either Pharaoh Senusret II or Senusret III of the Twelfth dynasty of Egypt) may have constructed the ancient canal, the Canal of the Pharaohs, joining the Nile with the Red Sea (BC 1897–1839),
when an irrigation channel was constructed around BC 1848 that was navigable during the flood season, leading into a dry river valley east of the Nile River Delta named Wadi Tumilat.
The Egyptian government launched construction in 2014 to expand and widen the Ballah Bypass for 35 km (22 mi) to speed up the canal's transit-time.
Also, the wideness of the expansion has been changed from 61 meters (200ft) to 312 meters (1,024ft).
The expansion intended to nearly double the capacity of the Suez Canal, from 49 to 97 ships per day.
In 2020, this meant a transit of volume of 18,829 ships.
The canal is a lockless seawater canal, different from the Panama Canal.
