Time Contents:
• 0:00 to 1:30 = introductory comments;
• 1:31 to 2:37 = description of symptoms/problem;
• 2:38 to 5:27 = preliminary checks to perform (checking battery, connections, performing voltage drop tests, de-pressurizing fuel system), locations of ground connections;
• 5:28 to 6:17 = explaining that the intake manifold will be removed in order to access alternator; will be removing air box, air intake etc;
• 6:18 to 7:35 = check for parasitic draw, took out FI fuse to depressurize fuel system, THIS WAS INCORRECT, I explain the correct way of doing this later on in the video;
• 7:36 to 9:07 = air snorkel removed, air box removed, unplugged some sensors, disconnected some vacuum hoses, clips;
• 9:08 to 10:48 = throttle body removed, wiring harness unplugged and moved out of the way, show where the intake bolts/nuts are;
• 10:49 to 20:53 = intake removed and secured out of the way, removal of clips secured to intake manifold, showed where alternator is located (already removed for clarity) and its bolts [NOTE: the black colored bolt located closest to the alternator pulley is slightly longer than the other bolts, make sure you do not mix them up], showed what tools I used for removal, alternator does NOT remove from the bottom (unless you remove the right front drive shaft), intake is not that difficult to remove;
• 20:54 to 23:18 = 2007-2009 and 2011-2013 SX4’s have different alternators, recommend removing intake manifold to remove alternator, before installing alternator, check starter bolts and connections, apply dielectric grease to all electrical connections,
• 23:19 to 26:39 = trick on how to push back the bushing into the alternator to ease installation;
• 26:40 to 29:12 = new alternator installed, location of alternator mounting bolts, make sure all connectors are connected, connect ground wires;
• 29:13 to 36:28 = serpentine belt routing, connect the wire clips to the intake manifold only once it is installed (this is to avoid any drag on intake when installing), install intake manifold at a slight angle, torque values;
• 36:30 to 41:23 = showed alternative tools to use to install intake manifold bolts/nuts, re-install the wiring harness and various electrical connectors, re-connect throttle body, NOTE: do not take out the 15 amp FI fuse to relieve fuel pressure, remove the fuel pump relay, open the gas cap to relieve pressure and then start the vehicle and let it die and then crank over for a few seconds to relieve any residual fuel pressure, now you are ready to disconnect fuel hose;
• 41:24 to 46:03 = installation of air box, air snorkel, recommend bench testing new alternator before installing to verify it works, run intake manifold fasteners down evenly, then torque to value, recommend to do a parasitic draw test to ensure no draws, at 44:18 I should have said ‘Negative’ battery post, start vehicle and check for leaks including fuel, check charging output with volt meter;
Description:
This is a talk-only video on tricks and tips on replacing a generator (i.e., alternator) on a 2011 Suzuki SX4, 2.0 liter petrol engine, J20 Kosai Production model.
PLEASE NOTE that this differs from petrol models from 2007-2009. This video applies to 2010-2013 SX4 models.
I did not show the actual repairs itself, being by myself with only my camera phone really gave me no other option, however, I hope I was able to help some Suzuki SX4 owners.
If there are any questions, please leave them in the comments below and I will answer back. Thank you for watching.
