2JZ 2sday #6 - Spark plugs on Heat range, Gapping and Tip Material
The simplest and yet one of the most important thing in your engine - Spark Plugs. The most basic knowledge about spark plugs, you can find here: spark plugs heat range, the tip gapping, and tip materials.
For OEM daily driven cars, going for those copper/ nickel / original spark plugs is the best bang for buck. However it is different story when we are talking about performance or racing applications here.
If the spark plugs cannot conduct heat away from its tip (due to longer insulator neck, we call it hotter spark plug) , then it may cause pre-ignition, detonation, knocking or we call it pinging. The top number engine killer. However if the spark plugs are too cold, then at low RPM the engine becomes an issue because it may have poor cleaning effect of the spark plugs, causing fouling.
The 2nd thing is about the gap between the tip of the electrode to the ground. Too close, the spark will be very weak and therefore causing incomplete combustion (not powerful). If the gap is too far apart, then during high RPM, the engine may experience miss. Therefore the correct gapping must be done, and may need to do on track day too =)
The 3rd one is totally up to the engine owner to decide. Although there exists many expensive spark plugs, but durability and heat conductivity are the only things to be considered. Silver, Platinum and Iridium are the most popular materials for aftermarket spark plugs, and please consult professionals when choosing the right spark plugs for you.
Inside there is another tip for tuners, making use of spark plugs as indicator of the proper heat range was selected. If changed to colder spark plugs, but there is still fouling issues, then can do adjustments on fueling and timing advancement. Beware though, only professionals can do that by comparing the second set of spark plugs with the first spark plugs.
