Restoration of a Huge Axe from the northern Sweden. This is a heavy huge rough looking axe that is going thru a transformation. See me restore this tool to beyond awesome.
ABOUT THE AXE
I bought this axe from a local farmer here in the northern Sweden. He told me that it has been used as a slaughter axe, to chop heads of chickens. Its maybe + 100 years old and has been repaired along the way. So it was not original looking when I received is. Some one has been welding on the axe head so it would attach to a wooden stick. NOT good!
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
I started by removing the wooden stick. And all the nuts and bolts. After that I gave it a nice sandblasting. I removed the non-original handle fitting with my angle grinder and welded the two holes together.
I did not have any information about the original axe handle fittings. I could only imagine how they should look based on the little rusty part which was left from the original ones. So I decided to forge some new ones with old blacksmith steel to match the old axe. I think they came out perfectly. I had an old wooden handle in hickory wood that I fitted to match.
I hardened the edge of the axe and gave it a really rough old look. It was all held together by some custom brass rivets that I hammered in the holes I drilled. I gave it some oil and did some easy polishing and added a custom decoration on the top of the handle.
I am very pleased about this restoration. I think it turned out to be a very rough and cool axe.
