The 2.5-liter turbocharged WRX STI flat engine strives for revs and pumps out the characteristic flat sound from the car's four exhaust pipes. But this old engine isn't as smooth or stiff as the smaller turbo fours powering Subie's closest colleagues. Along with some initial lag from the large turbocharging, the engine's lack of low ground level is manifested in a short, punchy power supply, which can be cumbersome throughout the city. The operation of a standard six-speed manual transmission is necessary for the car to pull hard, including offensive, high-speed clutch drops to achieve maximum acceleration from a standstill. However, driven with full fury, the STI controls are effectively synchronized.
Thanks to its buttoned chassis and all-wheel drive traction, the STI is more sporty and enjoyable on winding country roads than the regular WRX. The solid suspension controls excessive body movement at the expense of some ride comfort on rougher asphalt, but this hottest Subaru is still livable as a daily driver for enthusiasts. Its electrically assisted steering is quick, direct, and blessed with moderate feel, while the adjustable center differential allows the driver to further fine-tune the chassis by varying the drivetrain's front-to-rear torque split. The STI's pedals are nicely spaced for race-driver-like heel-and-toe downshifts, with the firm brake pedal returning good initial bite and easy modulation.
