Radiator Cooling Fan Not Working | How To Diagnose Troubleshoot - Motor Relay Fuse Sensor Wiring?

If your radiator or cooling fan is not working and you're trying to find ways on how to diagnose or trouble shoot the problems, then this video might give you some ideas on how to correctly identify what the main issue might be.

There are several reasons why the cooling fan in your car is not working. You might have a bad fan motor, broken fuses, failed relay, temperature sensor switch malfunction or not working and maybe wiring or electrical issues.

In this DIY auto repair video, young mechanic Aiman and Hizami will attempt to shed some light on how to test these components to see if you could use the process of elimination in order to single out what the problem might be. After all, diagnosis is the most difficult part in fixing a car.

This video was done on a 2003 Honda Accord 2.4L (which is the same as Honda years 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007 DX LX and EX, and should be the same as many other Acura and Honda models such as Civic, CRV, Element, Pilot and Odyssey.

Testing the fan motor is probably the easiest. All you need to do is supply power to the motor and see if it's working or not. You can also jump the pin on your relay socket (pin #1 and #2 which are equivalent to Pin 87 & 30 on the output side of the relay socket). If your motor is not working, here's a good video on how to remove, replace and install the motor:

Checking the fuses should be easy and self explanatory as well, but if you're not sure how to do it, please refer to the following video on how to do it:

Testing the relay is somewhat complicated, but the easiest method is to swap the relay with a known good one, or just buy a new one. Genuine OEM part might be fairly expensive, but an after market one should be cheaper especially if you are able to buy them online from Amazon or eBay.

The next step in the process is to test the temperature switch or coolant sensor. In general there are a few ways to do this. You can jump the sensor switch, but in the case of Honda Accord's temp sensor, it will only be activated when the engine coolant temperature reaches operating temperature therefore the only way to test it is by heating it in boiling water. Check this video out to find out how to do it:

If all of the above are working and not malfunction, then your issue could be elsewhere such as bad wiring, problem with fuse socket, electrical problem, PCM or ECM. Testing wiring or electrical problems will not be easy and you might need wiring diagram, which we also provided in this video. However, the wiring diagram provided is only for 2003-2008 Honda Accord.

In our case, what we found out was that the AC pressure switch did not detect enough refrigerant in the system and the Condenser relay did not activate the fan.

Ultimately, if you are not able to solve the issue of problem, there is only one way, which is to bring your car to qualified mechanic or auto dealership, which usually will cost you some money, and that's why sometimes trying to diagnose, fix and repair the problem yourself would be the way to go.

Here's a good article on how to understand relay:
