Hey Guys. If you’re considering purchasing a yacht and haven’t appointed a broker to advise you yet, I’m definitely hoping I get the privilege of working with you, but if it’s not me this is the 6 reasons why you need to put a yacht broker in your corner as you select the best yacht at the best price.
1) Real Estate Vs Car Purchases – When you buy a home, you work with a realtor, but when you buy a car you negotiate directly with the dealer or seller; buying a boat or yacht is just like real estate. By putting a yacht broker or purchasing advisor in your corner, you have someone who professionally does that to make sure you make informed decisions.
2) It Costs Nothing, Saves You a Lot – Appointing a broker costs you nothing and you’ll 100% save more than you would on your own. The broker you appoint will be compensated through a split of the commission paid by the seller, which means nothing comes out of your pocket until you decide to sell.
3) Historical Prices – The most important piece of info to buy any yacht at the lowest price is finding out the historical sales prices. If you’re buying a 2008 112’ Westport, the most recent 2008 112’ Westport sale price is recorded in the yachting MLS, which means you shouldn’t be paying anything more than that. Often times selling brokers use this as their baseline and markup the ask of their vessels by 30% which creates a perception of a deal or value when an unrepresented buyer gets it below list, yet above where it should be, the oldest trick in the book that unfortunately gets about 40% of boat buyers each year.
4) Off Market – If you’re interested in a particular yacht, your broker might know of similar yachts in a better condition not currently being listed for sale but perhaps may be. If you followed a particular yacht but it was sold a while back, your broker can look up the transaction and potentially call on the seller or buyer to see if it may be available for sale again.
5) Market Awareness – If you’re looking into buying a particular yacht that has been sitting for a while, there may be a good reason and your broker may know why. They will know what a truly good deal looks like and they will know customers that have had either good or bad experiences in particular vessels.
6) Post-Sale Connections – After you buy your yacht, you’re going to need insurance, crew, financing, registration services, charter companies, and surveyors just to name a few. Having a broker or advisor gives you immediate access to their network which makes your life a lot easier.
