π§ How to Fix Leaking Car Gas Tank - Permatex Gas Tank Repair Putty - 95 Geo Prizm
Repair Confirmed: Gas Tank no longer leaks
Notice: Due to built up pressure in the gas tank, this repair ended up failing after a bit. I ended up switching to Permatex 09101 Fuel Tank Repair Patch. This patch is MUCH more difficult to work with but the results are superior.
Buy two, you'll probably mess up on the first try.
The nice part is.. once it's dry it can be easily peeled off.
Also, the brush is useless to for applying the "goop".
Instead, squeeze it onto the mesh patch the push it into place.
Use the brush to touch up what remains.
I found mine at the local O'Reily's Auto parts store (only auto parts store that carried it), but it can also be purchased on Amazon.
The putty does work, however if you're tank has excess pressure building up like mine, you'll notice the putty is not so easy to remove in order to re-seal.
My solution to built up pressure... don't use a gas cap. I just stuff a plastic grocery bag in the hole and call it good. This has not hurt my gas mileage, at least not enough to notice.

How to fix leaky gas tank using Permatex putty specifically meant for repairing gas leaks. This puddy can be used on wet leaks where gasoline is present.
I used a flat head screwdriver to lightly scrape away the outer membrane of the gas tank. Then I used a wire brush to remove any debris that was leftover. Using some carb cleaner to remove excess gunk from the surface is a good idea. Be sure to shape the putty to a point, applying the "tip" directly on the hole/crack you are trying to seal. This way you run less of a risk of developing air pockets where gas can accumulate and possibly cause a weak spot.
Once you have the putty in place, use a small amount of water on you fingers to smooth out the edges and give it a flush surface. This will help prevent any sort of penetration on the edge of the sealed area and make any sanding or finishing job easier.
