WHAT IS YOUR CHAINPLATE ATTACHED TO? (Bulkhead Rebuild / Repair) Patrick Childress Sailing #54

Fixing bulkheads and chainplates, on a sailboat, using Formica, a laminate trimmer and a multi-tool ; from walls, to bulkheads, shelves to headliners; why not....its easy to do yourself, a cheap alternative to painting, and it can be very pretty too. In this case, we finish a repair on a sailboat bulkhead with Formica, using a laminate trim router and a multi tool. This is Part 2 of the bulkhead repair... Leaks from chain plates over the years had caused some rot and water damage to the bulkheads. Patrick made a strong repair to the bulkhead with fiberglass, but now it looks so ugly! This video shows how he uses Formica to both protect the fiberglassed, epoxied wooden bulkheads, as well as make everything look a whole lot prettier, inside and out. This video similar to Sail Life’s Bulkhead Beautification- DIy Sailboat Repair, except being uses paint. Here is the video from Sail Life :

Sailing around the world requires constant boat maintenance and boats repairs, to keep the boat seaworthy and floating. This is just one more thing to make sure the boat is strong, and that the standing rigging and mast stays standing.

How to repair a bulkhead in a sailboat will show you that this diy boat project doesn’t have to be complicated, and that you can do it yourself with the proper tools.

DISCLAIMER: Putting Formica over rotten bulkheads is not going to protect bulkheads. The rot must be repaired and the wood must be sealed with epoxy before Formica or Wilsonart laminate is put on top, as shown in previous video. Your situation could be different and. A professional boatbuilder should be consulted. A strong bulkhead is what holds your chainplates, which si what holds your rigging up! You must be sure everything is strong!
