Worn Out Lower Control Arm Ball Joints Results In Clunking Noise While Driving
We had this 2015 Volkswagen Polo visit one of our MotoFyx car repair workshop for an annual service along with a concern relating to that of heavy clunking noise being observed from the front end of the car while driving, Also The braking performance of the car was not upto the mark.In order to avoid any possibilities of a potential breakdown and as the car was also due for its annual service, the car owner reached out to us for assistance.
Upon a detailed inspection of the car by our expert technicians, an initial road trial also did initiate that the car was pulling onto the right side while driving along with steering wheel vibration and clunking noise being observed in the car. Upon further inspection, it was observed that the lower control arm ball joints had significant play.
Also the front pad material had become hard and had developed uneven wear, on account of inferior frictional material used in them thereby lowering the frictional grip upon braking. The front brake discs in the process had developed uneven wear by means of being in contact with the brake pads. While the front brake pads required immediate replacement, the front brake disc required surface levelling by means of skimming.
*Function of the lower control arm:
- The control arm connects the steering knuckle to the frame and stabilizes the car by allowing the chassis and the wheels to move in unison while the car is in motion
*Symptoms of a weak lower arm:
- Car pulling to one side
- Uneven tyre wear
- Vibrations while driving
- Clunking sound
- Noise & jerking while braking
*Solution:
- The weak lower control arm assembly was replaced with new genuine parts
- Annual service along with Wheel alignment was performed
- Front brake disc was surface levelled in a lathe machine
- The worn out front brake pads were replaced with new brake pads.
