How To Fix A Noisy Power Steering Pump - Fluid Flush / Fluid Exchange - Toyota / Lexus
If your power steering pump gets noisy, try flushing out the old fluid and pour in some new fluid with bearing and seal conditioners. First make sure your p/s belt isn't lose and slipping which can be a common source of belt squeal.
In this video (performed on a 2001 Lexus RX300 with 175,000 miles) I drained out (via oil suction pump) and removed the p/s reservoir canister followed by cleaning out any sludge, sediment or debris that may have accumulated on the filter screen. I did this by using brake clean solvent and compressed air. I then reconnect the reservoir to the chassis, plugged up the oil return port hole and connected the oil supply line back to the canister supply port. After filling the canister with new fluid, I attached an extension hose to the oil return hose and ran it to an external oil pan. By starting the car, the car's power steering pump will push oil through the return hose with the dirty oil being captured by the oil pan. Note: The engine takes only a few seconds for the reservoir canister to completely drain. Immediately shut off the engine then refill and repeat. The total oil capacity of the power steering system is around 1 quart. So I pushed though 1/2 quart of new fluid followed with conditioner fluid.
