Check Fuel Cap message is basically an EVAP leak error code. Your car is equipped with a pretty sophisticated evap/emissions system that monitors the level of pressure in the gas tank. This is done to detect possible leaks, including a loose gas cap. If you’ve left the cap loose (or off), the Check Fuel Cap message will show up on your dash. To handle the situation, follow these steps:
Turn off the engine.
Open the fuel door.
Double check the gas cap and tighten if necessary, at least 3 clicks
Crank the car and drive normally.
The light should go off within a few days or you can reset it by pushing the RES/SEL button on the dashboard, using OBDII scanner to reset it and disconnecting the battery for a few minutes (but this step might involve having to reset the radio code, here's the link on how to do that:
If it doesn’t go away, the code will need to be checked. If the light doesn’t go off, it could mean there is a leak in your system, or the cap is bad. Can you ignore the message? Not advisable, if it doesn't go away please consult certified mechanic shop, auto repair garage or dealership.
What does it mean if the Check Fuel Cap message is displayed?
When the Check Fuel Cap Light comes on in the dashboard, this may indicate that the fuel cap has not been affixed onto the fuel tank filler tube properly, the fuel cap is missing from the fuel tank filler tube, or that the fuel cap is damaged in some way. These issues will prevent the fuel cap from serving one or more of its many vital purposes. Here are some possible causes for the Check Fuel Cap Light to come on:
Missing fuel cap
The fuel cap is loose
The fuel cap is too tight
The fuel cap is damaged
Poor quality gas
Failed purge valve
A common misconception is that the only purpose of a fuel cap is for it to be a top for the fuel tank. It actually has many purposes and is a critical component of the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system. If the fuel cap is not affixed to the fuel tank properly, or is damaged, this may cause problems with the efficiency of the engine, problems with the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system, a decrease of gas mileage, and/or fuel leaks.
A fuel cap creates vacuum pressure seal
A fuel cap seals pollutants and fumes inside the fuel tank
A fuel cap prevents fuel contamination and protects the fuel tank
