Audi S5 V8 FSI 4.2 Engine Failure - Rod Knock Sound
Audi S5 V8 FSI 4.2
Engine light on, noise coming from engine.
Engine light on:
1) P0011: A Camshaft Position (Bank1) Timing over-advanced or System Performance
2) P2342: Cylinder #7 Above Knock Threshold
3) P1324: Knock Sensor 4 Signal too high
To determine the rod knock I did the following:
- removed driver side valve cover
- checked to see if the valves are opening and closing with hand cranking the engine
- found extreme amounts of oil varnishing in the engine and possible sludging
- removed oil filter and found heavy amounts of metal contaminants
- proceeded to drop lower oil pan & found fragments of Babbitt (bearing material)
- determined knock is from bottom end and not from cylinder head, tear down and further diagnosis required
- due to rebuild costs used motor was acquired with lesser mileage
- vehicle was driven in
Most types of larger engine configurations from Audi require a complete drivetrain removal in order to access certain Fasteners and components for engine repairs. I will attempt to swap this motor with a good known used one in my garage.
