Simson is a relatively old company, founded in 1854 by two Jewish brothers named Simson and originally engaged in the production of weapons. In the twenties
and thirties, the company expanded its business with the production of bicycles, motorcycles and cars.During the Third Reich, the factory was naturally taken away from the
Jewish family, after the war Simson was nationalized and received the names of Ernst Telman. At the same time, the Simson brand was retained. The largest
the model was a moped Simson S51, the production of which at peak reached 100,000 units per year!It became a further development of the equally well-known S50 model. In total,
more than 1.6 million mopeds of this series were produced.
The Simson S51 moped received a new two-stroke engine with a working volume of 49.8 cc, whose power was 3.7 hp at 5500 rpm. From an old engine
The S-50 new powertrain differed in dimension 38 x 44 mm versus 40 x 39.5. The design of the motor was simplified, made more technologically advanced and easy to maintain.
The S-51 engine has also been adapted to a four-speed gearbox. Although the transition to a new gearbox did not happen immediately - a version with a three-
speed gearbox was produced for several years. Also, the declared resource of the new engine was increased to 40,000 km. But the Simson S50 and S51 were famous for the fact that they could accelerate to 70 km/h in the drain,
with a declared maximum speed of 60 km/h.
Externally, it is quite difficult to see the difference between the old and the new model. The chassis remained the same. The basis is a ridge tubular frame to which the engine is attached, a body kit
and a rear triangular stretcher. The design is quite simple, but has sufficient strength for this type of equipment. The Simson S51 was produced in as many as nine modifications, the
difference between which was in the configuration. Simson S51 N is the basic and most budget version. It was distinguished by the absence of turn signals, a battery, the simplest
rear shock absorbers and a three-speed gearbox. The next version, the S51B, already had a richer configuration - turn signals, ignition lock, battery,
hydraulic shock absorbers. Over time, changes and additions were made to the S51B design, which led to the appearance of three submodefications.
