Squeaking Noises While Driving But Not When Braking: Causes And Troubleshooting
Squeaking Noises While Driving But Not When Braking: Causes And Troubleshooting. In this video I will talk about squeaking noises while driving but not when braking.
Here’s what causes it:
Worn suspensions
The suspension system absorbs the vibrations from driving on bumps and uneven roads to ensure your comfort. If any of its components are damaged or worn, you may hear a squeaking noise as the system absorbs vibrations.
A failing power steering pump.
The power steering pump pressurizes and circulates power steering fluid into the steering gear. This action makes it easy to turn the steering wheel, enhancing your driving experience. If this component fails, turning your steering wheel will require more effort. You may also hear groaning, screeching, or squeaking noises when you turn the wheel or rev the engine.
A damaged CV joint
The CV joints connect the axle to the wheels and facilitate power distribution from the transmission via the axle to the wheel. If it fails, you'll hear squeaking, clicking, popping, or knocking when you accelerate.
Here’s how to troubleshoot these issues:
Inspect the suspension
• Park your car on a level surface and raise it on jack stands.
• Rock your tires to check the ball joints. If there's no flex, the ball joints are okay. If the tire moves, check or replace the ball joints.
• Next, remove the tires and check the sway bars and end links. If the end links flex or move around, have them replaced.
• Shake the strut and spring assembly. If it shakes, replace it.
• Finally, shake the tie rod and replace it if it's loose.
We recommend taking your vehicle to a mechanic for this inspection since the suspension system is complex.
Inspect the power steering pump.
• Consult your owner's manual to locate the power steering pump.
• Once you find it, check the area for leaks around the hoses and pump.
• Check the power steering fluid levels. If it's too low or dark, replace the fluid.
• Start your engine and listen for unusual noise from the power steering pump.
• Turn the steering wheel to check its stiffness with the car parked and the engine on.
Again, take your car to a mechanic or dealership to have the power steering pump replaced.
Inspect the CV joint.
• Raise your car on jack stands and turn the front wheels to see the CV joint.
• Inspect the driver’s side joint first for cracks, rips, or tears.
• Once done, inspect the passenger’s side joint.
• Also, check if the joints and wheels are covered with grease.
• If they are, take your car to a mechanic for repair.
