Discover Amsterdam - Top 10 European City - Venice of the North | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

We really love Amsterdam!

Amsterdam is officially the capital of the Netherlands although the political capital is The Hague. The name Amsterdam was derived from the river Amstel.

Did you know that there are more bridges in Amsterdam than in Venice? Yeah, hard to believe but there are 409 bridges connecting Venice’s canals comparing to 1,281 bridges in Amsterdam - three times as many as Venice! Maybe if we tell you that there are 165 canals that combine for a length of over 100 km you might not be so surprised. One of them, the Canal Ring became part of the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010.

Another interesting fact about this city is that there are over 800,000 bicycles in the city and the the number surpases the number of people living in there. This means less pollution, less cars and less traffic. How great is that?

Amsterdam is also one of the most liberal cities in the world with both marijuana and prostitution legalized. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. However, you will be surprised to learn that Amsterdam is at the same time one of the top 25 safest cities in the world to live in and also one of the top 15 cities to have a high standard of living.
