It seems that the majority of people tend to take the time to learn about the bigger components of their car like their engine, tires, and brakes, while the smaller parts get overlooked. However, these small unseen parts play a vital role in the performance of your car. So today we’re going to take a look at one of the most powerful internal parts of your car, your spark plugs. In this video, Toyota of Orlando will help you learn how important they truly are and how to stay on top of their maintenance.
How do they work?
Spark plugs may be tiny but don’t underestimate their strength. They are in charge of creating the needed electricity to start your car. To help you understand, think of them as mini bolts of lightning. Your spark plugs send out sparks of electricity over a small space in your engine to ignite the combustion needed to start your car. Through this, the pistons of your car are put into motion and the car is powered up. With this piston movement, the car can stay on and steadily produce and burn compressed fuel.
To put it in simpler terms, spark plugs are the little lightning rods that ignite the fuel in your engine’s ignition chamber, allowing your car to get started.
Where are they located?
Under the hood of your car, you can spot a group of four to eight wires that lead to different spots on your engine compartment. Your spark plugs will be at the engine end of these wires under the plugs covers that connect them.
However, the location of your plugs will be a little different depending on what kind of engine your car has. Therefore, we recommend consulting your vehicle’s owner’s manual first to determine the location and number of spark plug wires you have.
Another side note, some vehicles do have engine covers. So in order to see the plugs, you will have to remove the engine cover.
Why are they important?
We cannot stress enough how important spark plugs are to the performance of your vehicle. Without spark plugs, your set of wheels would simply not work. A car without spark plugs is a car that doesn’t run. The quality of your spark plugs directly determines the quality of your engine’s performance.
Signs of trouble
The following are the most common symptoms of spark plugs that need some attention:
• Reduced fuel economy: One of the main jobs of your spark plugs is to assist in burning fuel in the combustion cycle efficiently. If you’re experiencing a sudden reduction in the fuel efficiency of your car, then it is likely that you’re suffering from worn-out spark plugs.
• Trouble starting your car: When spark plugs become too worn, it’s very common to experience difficulty starting your engine. We recommend contacting a certified technician at the first sign of difficulty.
• Delayed acceleration: When a car is accelerating poorly this usually signifies a problem with the ignition system of your car. Typically, slow acceleration means there is a problem with one of the sensors that tell your engine computer when to fire the spark plugs, but this symptom can also indicate a worn spark plug. When the material of a spark plug becomes too worn the plug’s power is reduced which will show in the acceleration of your vehicle.
• Engine misfire: If every time you start your engine you’re met with strange stumbling sounds, one of your spark plug wires or spark plug tips could be damaged. If you ignore this problem, exhaust emissions will build up causing your engine power to decrease and a reduction in your fuel economy.
