Converting a Flat Roof To a Pitched Roof - How I did mine

This shows how my flat asphalt roof was dug up and converted to a tiled pitched (sloping) roof. It was all done by me and a carpenter friend who did the frame and was approved by UK building regulation control and was successfully signed off by them. If you as a DIYer are thinking of saving money and doing it yourself then this should help show the rough methods and stages involved. I have tried not to be too detailed in order to limit the video to 30 minutes. There should be enough shown here to illustrate the stages and construction method. When you’ve done it once you realise it is not too difficult but it is a fair bit of work.

It is not intended for good builders who probably know most of this stuff already, but more for the DIYer. Having said that many so called builders build some shocking roofs with many faults being water leaks, poor structural support and no resistance to roof spread/ collapsing! So even if you don’t do it yourself it is good to know some of the steps and principles involved.

Here are a few links on buying bits. Nowadays I have found it cheaper buying on ebay than from a local builders purchants, for instance with lead flashing, on:

Silicon sealant for lead, “lead mate”:

Breathable roof membrane:

Similarly use eBay via the above links to get other stuff like a bricklayers trowel, cement colouring (coloring), UPVC facia, soffits and batten etc.
